Derrick and Melody Cameron

 

Derrick & Melody CameronMelody has been around Cape Breton music all her life. She has been step dancing for 28 years and playing the fiddle for the past 13 years. She has danced the Eight Hand Reel, the Scots Four.

Over the years Melody has performed with Natalie MacMaster and Ashley MacIsaac. She has participated in Celtic Colors events and entertained all over Cape Breton in many of its festivals. In the Spring of ‘98 she helped "The Rankins" with dance choreography for their Western tour. In July 2001, she performed alongside other Cape Breton musicians on the main stage at the Stan Rogers Folk Festival.

Melody and her husband Derrick released their debut CD, "Looking Forward, Looking Back", in the summer of 2002.

Derrick and Melody Cameron live in West Mabou.  Derrick, a talented guitar player developed his skill in Scottish music with encouragement from great players such as Willie Kennedy, Joey Beaton and Father Angus Morris of Mabou.

Derrick and Melody perform together at the Baddeck Gathering Ceilidhs as well as many gatherings, dances, pubs and concerts. In ‘98 they traveled to the Washington Irish Folk Festival. In July 2001 they performed alongside other Cape Breton musicians on the main stage at Stan Rogers Folk Festival.

Derrick and Melody founded the group "Triskele" in the spring of 2000. Colin Watson, Blair MacDonald and Joel Chiasson are also members of this group. Triskele puts on live shows and workshops that aim to entertain and educate the audience in Cape Breton’s Gaelic song, music and stepdance traditions.

For the past three years, Triskele has put on a weekly stage show through July and August at the Creamery building in Port Hawkesbury, N.S.. Triskele has also performed regularly at the Louisbourg Playhouse, Christmas Island Ceilidhs and other venues around Cape Breton Island. Triskele shared the stage with Sharon Shannon and Beolach in Whycocomagh, Cape Breton on Oct. 12/2002 as part of the Celtic Colours International Festival.

Colin Watson, Blair MacDonald and Joel Chiasson were featured as guests on Melody and Derrick’s  CD, "Looking Forward, Looking Back".
